The Unicorn

Filled with magic and mystery,
A unicorn prances and dances in dreams.
In a mind, a unicorn seems,
As mythical as a fairy with wings.
But in a heart, filled with peace,
A unicorn is as real
As a warm summer breeze

This poem has a bit of a story, it was my very first poem.
Written when I was 11 or 12, I think. It was also the
first thing that ever received any notice.
I was quite proud that my little fingers had written this,
and in my moment of glory, I proudly showed it to my
6th grade teacher Mrs. Ries.
Her words to me were not, Oh Wendy, how pretty,
or how talented you are. You did a wonderful job.
She said and I quote, "Where did you copy this from."
Not in the least bit joking. She'd really thought I'd
stolen it. It was one of the most hurtful things anyone
has ever said to me.  But I must also thank her,
because it inspired me, and I never did stop writing.
